Digital copies - buy all 3 books, less than $10!
So, first of all - hi there! - it's been awhile. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I'm having a great one so far. I traveled to South Africa for the World Cup (it was an awesome experience) and am looking forward to a trip to Amsterdam next month.

Next, Amazon has changed their rules and allowed authors to set prices for digital copies. I spent last week trying my best to format all three of the novels so they would be easier to read and cheaper to buy. The current price for each book is $3.

Based on the success of these e-books, I hope to digitally release the last book in the series, The Line Up, later this year.

You can find the digital books here:

Also, don't have a Kindle, no worries! There are free Kindle reading Apps for almost every kind of wireless platform (including laptops). You can find them and download them here:

All the best,

Why I'm a Band Dork
In the spirit of the community revival that's taking place (thanks mods!), I took a spin through my LJ and the "band" tag, and came back across this piece I had written about two years back. I originally wrote it for the community feature at Halftime Magazine and reposted it both in my livejournal and my blog which features both sports and marching content *cough*shamelessplug*cough*. A fair warning, it's pretty long, but check it out if you want to. Enjoy!

Yes, I said it--band dork. It's a badge I now wear proudly. But that wasn't always the case.

Let's start back from the first time I picked up an instrument, save for the "flutophone" recorder in elementary school. When the option became available in 3rd grade, my mom rented me a violin , and from there it was off to learn to play via the Suzuki method. That lasted all of a few weeks until I decided to quit.

My next opportunity came in 5th grade, when opportunities arose to join the band. My choices were limited; my family owned a trumpet, so that's what I decided to play. I played trumpet my entire 5th grade year in the band program, but that wasn't for me either.

In the 6th grade, I switched again (came to my senses, I'd say now) and decided to become a drummer. I attended a performing arts middle school and spend my first year as an instrumental music minor, learning to play the drums via the Yamaha books that I'm sure many of us used. By the 7th grade, I dropped my instrumental music minor (and vocal music major) for one reason only--with the drama major and dance minor I picked up, I could participate in those two activities and remain in the school's band and choir, giving myself the best of all worlds.

Mod Update!
Cause we had so few Favorite Memories submitted, I'd like to keep this challenge going for this weekend. Feel free to keep doing the Best Section challenge! We've gotten some really good submissions for it!! The challenges will typically go for a week and then a new challenge will be issued.

For members submitting: Don't forget to title your post with what the challenge is! Because "Best Section" was introduced later in the week as it came to me, it will run until Tuesday night but "Favorite Memory" will only run for a couple more days ending on Saturday night. Saturday morning I will post asking for you guys to submit what our next challenge should be for our members to participate in. (It HAS to be marching band specific!) Sunday morning I will post a poll asking for members to vote in it. Whatever suggestion has the highest vote will be the new challenge for the week.

Thanks for posting here in the community guys! I would absolutely love to see pictures and posts on what your band is doing now that the marching season is upon us! The challenges are just a way to bring some posts back in the community and it is a fun thing for us to do to keep us involved. :)

Best Section
Submitted for your approval, my entry for "most important section"...

We ARE the marching band.

Without us, the band would just stand around looking confused.

When we tell you to go somewhere, you move!

You think you know your forms and sets, but nobody is more exact than us!

Roll-step, High-step, or jazz-run, without us you may as well just be tap-dancing in scuba gear.

When the director wants something to look GOOD, he turns to us to "figure it out."

Who are we...? click me to find out ;-)Collapse )

Thanks for keeping the community alive!

Best Section
For my "Best section" opinion, I'd like to highlight a subsection. I'm a percussionist and have played just about everything in the section at one point or another, but I'd like to give my best (sub)section love to where it all began for me: Cymbals.

Cymbals, moreso than any other section, have the unique ability to be part of the musical and visual package at the same time. They provide both the crash and the flash. Sadly they're a bit of a dying breed; some bands are content to put all crashes in the pit and not march even pits, an issue seen even more boldly in drum corps. Still, those who still hold it down in many bands take true pride in their craft.

Excellence at cymbal playing demands 100%. After all, a wrong note in the flute section can be covered up, and even muddy diddles in the snare line can be missed. But there's no hiding an errant cymbal crash.

True enough, there are many cymbalists who are "also-ran" percussionists or even double-reed players who can't march their instrument. But if you get a line who truly gets it and loves their plates, well, it's one of the finest things marching music has to offer.

Mod Challenge! The Best Section
First off, I'd like to thank mckenzie3nick for participating in the last challenge! I know we have more than enough members to have an active community and it's ok if you don't want to participate, but I'd love to see this community more active.

So! Here's another challenge for you!

I challenge you guys to tell me why your section is the best and why. Feel free to include a moment that showcased exactly why YOUR section is better than the others. (I'm looking for a personal experience that you had within your band that showed this).

I would love to see more people posting here! So please title it: "Best Section"

And... go!

favorite memory...
I would have to say my favorite band memory would be from my Junior year in the UMass Minuteman Marching Band. We were performing music from "The Little Mermaid" for Band Day, and there was this big hit in Part of Your World... it just sent shivers down my spine. Beautiful! And with 3,300 people performing all at once!

Mod Challenge for you! Favorite Marching Band Memory
Ok, so here it goes.

I'd like to see this community get more active. I'm so excited that people are still actively a part of it as shown by romeoslove.

Since the fall is coming up, I'd like to create more buzz here.

I'd like for you to do one post (or more!) of your favorite marching band memory. Try to make it so the title says something along the lines of "My Favorite Marching Band Memory" and write a post about your favorite memory in it! If you have more than 1 favorite memory, make more than 1 post. If your memory includes a picture, feel free to include it! (It has to be a PG rated picture though! ;) )

Easy enough right?

I'm excited to see what you guys have! And if you are new to marching band this year, I hope you make many awesome memories!!

With the season getting in gear and all, I was just wondering what everyone's show is going to be!
This year's show at my high school is going to be called Fusion!
I'm not sure what to make of it yet but I'm totally excited!

If you're looking for some reading material this summer...

I've written two marching band novels!  (And the third will be published later this year!)  They are both on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.com.  Let me know if you have any questions.

I'd love to hear what you think!
